Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. As you can see from the photos this is just a beautiful work of the cutler's art but it isn't a factory-made piece. Like many old cutlery pieces we've picked up in Italy it was probably made by some enterprising local blacksmith or even the farmer who originally used it. The quality of its steel blade is excellent and the finished product speaks for itself with great eloquence, proclaiming for all to hear, THIS is a cleaver to possess, use and display. It isn't signed but pieces like this rarely are. Not that it matters much--the important thing to recognize is the quality, beauty and utility of such a piece and there's virtually no limit to all three when it comes to this cleaver. Its blade was hand-forged from some incredibly fine carbon steel forged integrally with its tang/bolster and pommel--construction that should make any knife person nod in appreciation. This blade has been given a wickedly sharp edge that's just right for using it oriental-style, like a chef knife to chop veggies or anything else. The handle scales are ebony, framed on four sides by the knife's design. Condition is very good with no problems of any kind, as photos show. There is nothing in the modern market so eye-catching or so effective in use. It's 10-5/8 long with a blade that's 5" long by 4" wide. At 17.1 ounces, this piece never feels clumsy or unwieldy in the hand yet is more than enough to whack a chicken into its 8 respective parts. After all, lots of makers can produce something that looks nice but if it also functions as beautifully as it appears, then and only then can it be considered a true work of the cutler's art, as this cleaver surely is. Despite its considerable collector value, it'd be a dead shame not to use this piece and I sincerely hope its winner will find a way to keep it working. An heirloom-quality piece that is sure to thrill collector and user alike for generations to come.
