Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This beautifully preserved antique piece is one I've owned for some years, a barn-sale find in the French countryside near Thiers at a time when that region was still very rural and legitimate bargains could still be found on fine cutlery and sometimes on primitives in general. It is half top-quality antique cutlery and half vernacular folk-art. Hand-made by a very talented craftsman, perhaps even by the original chicken farmer who used it, it was expertly hand-forged with a carbon steel blade that's shaped like a fox, and a handle shaped like its tail, or at least where its tail would be.
Condition is used but remarkable, as you can plainly see in the photos. Its considerable collector value is nearly upstaged by the excellent performance one may still expect from it in use. For the purpose of this sale we've had it professionally edged and it's now RAZOR sharp to thrill even the most jaded user. The quality of the steel used in it is excellent, and the handle, too, is was made with great skill, using solid copper handle scales over a full and fatted tang, then reinforced at bolster and pommel with solid brass.
Most spectacular about it, though, is the seamless integration of the ornamental with the utilitarian, a reflection, perhaps, of the integral role that spirituality played in the daily lives of our nearly-lost agrarian past. Despite its naive simplicity, the fox, animated by the placement of a single eye, manages to strike a naturalistic pose of dignity and psychological acuity--more art than craft in that respect, I think. The relationship between a farmer raising chickens and any fox is legendarily antagonistic, but the maker of this cleaver honored his foe as an equal, at least insofar as it applied to dispatching those chickens into the great beyond! Should you choose to use it, it comes in a nice medium size for home or professional chef to use, measuring 11.25" long with 7-3/8" cutting edge on bottom of the blade. In every respect a truly great find for chef or folk-art lover alike and an instant heirloom in even the most discriminating collection. Our store's inventory is searchable using the search field or may be browsed by clicking on categories, with each option found on the left side of the store's homepage.
