This beautifully preserved antique piece was something of a barn-sale find in the Italian countryside in Umbria at a time when that region was still very rural and legitimate bargains could still be found on antique knives and on primitives in general. It is half top-quality antique cutlery and half vernacular folk-art.Hand-made by a very talented craftsman, perhaps even by the farmer who used it, it was expertly hand-forged with a thick, carbon steel blade that's shaped like a quail, and there is no doubt one of its primary purposes would've been dispatching poultry of all kinds (not just chickens in Italy, especially long ago). Condition is superb, as you can plainly see in the photos. Its considerable collector value is nearly upstaged by the excellent performance one may still expect from it in use. Its shape makes it equally suitable for slicing and cutting meat as it is for your toughest cutting and chopping. For the purpose of this sale we've had it professionally edged and it's now RAZOR sharp in a way that very few knives ever can be.
Since this blade was hand-forged from carbon steel it can be very, very sharp, indeed. The quality of the steel used in it is excellent, and the handle, too, is was made with great skill, from fine oxen horn handle scales brass-riveted over a full tang and strongly reinforced with solid, cast-brass bolsters and pommel, as well as copper liners--an extra bit of refinement found only in the finer custom pieces. Its fit and finish are outstanding.
Most spectacular about it, though, is the seamless integration of the ornamental with the utilitarian, a reflection, perhaps, of the integral role that spirituality played in the daily lives of our nearly-lost agrarian past. Despite its naive simplicity, the quail, animated by the placement of its nail-hanging hole at the eye, manages to strike a naturalistic pose of dignity and psychological acuity--more art than craft in that respect, I think. The maker of this cleaver honored his vanqished livestock as an equal, at least insofar as it applied to dispatching those quails, chickens and other poultry into the great beyond for dinner!Should you choose to use it, it comes in a nice medium size for home or professional chef to use, weighing in at 17.2 ounces and measuring 9-5/8" long with 5.75" by 4.25 blade. By any measure this is a truly great find for chef or folk-art lover alike and something that user or collector will readily come to love as an heirloom.
