Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This is a superb piece and a MUST HAVE for the serious chef or collector alike. If you hunt, raise livestock or just prefer to butcher your own meats, you'll find NONE finer in this highly desirable size.
This outstanding vintage meat cleaver was made in the Buffalo, NY by the L. White company, founded in 1837 and is marked as such inside the company's football-shaped logo, along with the size number: 8. This maker produced some of the very finest professional grade cutlery ever seen in this country and their fine cleavers are highly prized among collectors with very good reason: the quality is unmatched. It not only looks beautiful but feels beautifully balanced in the hand, which will be, for most users, a most pleasant surprise. Like all carbon steel cutlery, it will rust if not properly kept dry, but takes a RAZOR edge like no other, and outperforms stainless steel in almost every way (it is RAZOR sharp now, having been professionally edged for the purpose of this sale).
You must wipe it down after each use but its beauty and superior performance are worth it. Condition is excellent--this piece is rock solid and will stay that way for generations if properly maintained. As you can see it has developed a wonderful patina over its blade and over its gracefully shaped cherrywood handles, iron-pinned over a full and tapered tang.
Without a doubt, it will provide its lucky new user with heirloom quality for use, for display and for posterity. Measures 14" long with 8" by 4.25 blade, but in terms of beauty and utility, comes up HUGE by any measure! Don't pass up an opportunity to truly elevate the quality of cutlery in YOUR kitchen, amateur or professional. And it's never too early to find the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for chef on your list! A WORD ABOUT MAINTENANCE: Never use a dishwasher.Wash the knife by hand and wipe clean immediately thereafter. Wipe the knife clean when using it on wet or acidic foods. It WILL rust if not maintained properly. I apply a very thin coat of non-toxic mineral oil to blade and wooden handles periodically, to seal them from ambient moisture in the atmosphere (olive or corn oil will suffice).
