Even if it were unmarked there could be no mistaking this superb skinning/butcher knife as the work of any other. It is quite clearly marked, however, and we can see that it was made in the late 19th or early 20th century by Landers Frary & Clark in their highly-prized Samuel Lee line of professional butcher's cutlery. It's made in a design that was patented in 1896, which was also the design that ultimately took a top prize in the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 (later knives in this style were dated and marked as such). To say the least, it is in remarkably fine condition and though it was used, it was also lovingly maintained by someone who understood and appreciated fine cutlery, preserving the integrity of its blade and handle, both of which are beautiful, as you can see in the photos, free of cracks, chips or looseness--entirely stable in every regard, and as ready for use today as it was when newly minted. The star of these knives, though, is the bolster; reinforced with a steel ferrule, it has been given additional strengthening by the addition of a spherical bolster atop that, giving the knives their distinct look.

Also VERY nice about this piece is its size, in a HIGHLY desirable smaller profile (11-1/8" long with 5-7/8" blade) that makes it ideal for skinning or for use in the field as a hunting knife, much in the manner of their competitors' knives--Russell's Green River Works. It comes to you RAZOR sharp enough to shave your arm--a very nice feature no matter how or where you'll be putting it to work. It also comes in a top-quality leather sheath that fits it perfectly and whether you carry it into the field for use or display it on your trade blanket at your next rendezvous, it'll be sure to get LOTS of attention. While the knife obviously enjoys some significant value to collectors of fine cutlery and to collectors and re-enactors, it'd be a shame not to keep using it. Its bullnose shape makes it perfect for skinning or just about any meat-cutting or general cutting application.

Like all carbon steel knives, it's capable of taking a razor-sharp edge with ease, and outperforms stainless steel in every way. An excellent find for collector or user alike and something you'll be sure to embrace instantly as an heirloom.
