Please read our Terms below for details. This superb old Foster Bros. Knife has so much going for it it's difficult to know where to start. It comes from their Gold Star Line, which are some of the most distinctive knives ever made, incorporating top quality in every detail but especially striking because of their flush inlaid brass star rivets on their ebony and rosewood handles. But RARELY have we been able to offer you one like this in such whole condition, still bearing all of its original markings and mirror finish from the factory on its superb blade. That blade under any circumstances would be among some of the very best ever affixed to a culinary knife by any maker anywhere but in this case it represents the best of the best. Because whereas most Foster Bros. Blades of this era were hand-forged from incredibly fine carbon steel this one was forged from the RAREST carbon steel the company ever batched, made with a much higher-than-average nickel content for hardness.
These nickel steel knives are the most highly prized of all Foster Bros. Cutlery items and whether you want it for use or display in a collection you'll know you have something that very few others do--a MASTERPIECE in top condition. Best of all, we've had it professionally edged to be sharp enough to thrill even the most jaded user.Anyone who knows anything about knives can spot this beautiful knife from a mile away as having been made by Foster Bros. Thanks to its supersized brass rivets which are star-shaped and inlaid flush with the flat of its gorgeous old-growth rosewood handle. It is even more beautiful than the digital photos make it look, with some shadows and glare here and there in the pics. Its large, extra-hefty, curved carbon steel blade has a full and tapered tang and was entirely hand-forged in upstate New York in the early 1900's for sale widely across America in the meat-packing trade, though more than a few of these found less savory duty with hunters, trappers, scoundrels, soldiers and Native Americans--a true testament to the wide renown they enjoyed in their day. Even without the star-shaped rivets, the knife is recognizable as one by Foster Brothers, because of the hand-hatched work on every edge of the handle--one of their trademarks. Still, for those who need proof, its original markings are still perfectly legible on both handle and blade. Though it obviously has a great deal of collector value, it would be an utter joy in use for the serious butcher or chef.
Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and Foster Brothers made the best of the best, capable of attaining and keeping an edge that is RAZOR keen in a way that few knives ever are. If you do choose to put this knife to work you'll find it can do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock or just about any other cutting/slicing duty that even the most demanding kitchen or meat locker can offer.
If you're simply collecting, you're in luck--this is a rare opportunity to add some authenticity and quality to your collection with a knife you'll immediately recognize as an heirloom and most likely the new centerpiece of a collection. Its handles are old-growth rosewood of the highest quality, as useful and comfortable as they are beautiful to look at. Comes with 11-3/8" blade (16.25" overall length) that is strong and stout, like a hunting knife, but by any measure this is a VERY rare opportunity to put one of the finest knives you'll ever own into your hands and collection.
