This is one of TWO Foster Bros. #8 cleavers we're posting today and by FAR the larger and heftier one of the two. They represent similar sizing but vastly different weights and style of construction. This is a superb piece and a MUST HAVE for the serious user or collector alike, and whether you hunt, raise livestock or just prefer to butcher and cook your own meats, you'll find NONE finer. It comes from a top maker in one of their oldest and rarer styles and is in FANTASTIC condition; we're asking a premium price but you'll get what you pay for and MUCH more because there simply isn't anything this fine ANYWHERE on the modern market today. This outstanding vintage meat cleaver was made in upstate NY by the Foster Bros. Company, and is marked as such, along with the size number: 8. This is certainly one of the company's older cleavers, pre-dating their flying arrow-shaped logo that is much more commonly found on their very fine pieces. Its style of construction is also old enough to have been in the company's mid-late 19th Century origins. This maker produced some of the very finest professional grade cutlery ever seen in this country and their fine cleavers are highly prized among collectors with very good reason: the quality is unmatched. This cleaver is heavy-duty and RAZOR SHARP--just about as all you'll ever need in a one-handed cleaver. It's hefty enough to dispatch just about anything the modern chef or butcher may demand from it, but it's not cumbersome of overly heavy in any way. It not only looks beautiful but feels beautifully balanced in the hand, which will be, for most users, a most pleasant surprise.
Like all carbon steel cutlery, it will rust if not properly kept dry, but takes a RAZOR edge like no other, and outperforms stainless steel in almost every way (it is RAZOR sharp now, having been professionally edged for the purpose of this sale). You must wipe it down after each use but its beauty and superior performance are worth it. Condition is superb with a wonderful patina over its gracefully sculpted, turned cherrywood handle and carbon steel blade, which is anchored at bolster using a tube-shaped iron ferrule, then fastened at the end of its hidden tang using a large iron pommel. Its condition is astonishing, and without a doubt, it will provide its lucky new user with heirloom quality for use, for display and for posterity.
Weight is 48.3 ounces--OVER FOUR POUNDS! Measures 17" long with 8" by 6.25 blade, but in terms of beauty and utility, comes up HUGE by any measure!
