This fantastic antique came to us as part of a much larger collection of cutlery pieces we acquired from Italy and one needs only to take a peek at its rich and lustrous patina to recognize it as dating probably to the 1800's or possibly even earlier. Its classic, axe blade outline is very consistent with older cleavers I've seen from Italy over the years, most of which were made not in any factory but by the local village blacksmith. Regardless of its manufacturing origin, there can be no disputing its sheer beauty and utility. Hand-forged from some very thick, very fine carbon steel, this incredible, museum-quality piece is as useful today as it was when it was first forged.
In terms of materials, craftsmanship and beauty, it has EVERYTHING going for it one could hope. The handle of this piece was made from a single piece of hand-turned Italian oak, which has been pommeled and bolstered in brass--firmly fixed and will stay that way for another century or two if properly maintained.
Condition is excellent, as you can see, with no problems of any kind. It weighs in at a very impressive 30.3 ounces and measures 6.5" along its cutting edge; 3.75" wide 16 long from top to bottom at the center of handle. In every respect a truly great find for chef or folk-art lover alike and an instant heirloom in the eyes of anyone who recognizes quality.
