Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades.
In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. The digital photos simply don't do justice to the solid quality and beauty of this piece. Measuring 14.5" long, with an 6.75" by 5" blade, this beautifully preserved chef's or butcher's meat cleaver is stamped, "ZENITH, MARSHALL WELLS, TRADE MARK, " with the number "0. Believe it or not, despite its very substantial heft and size, this was the next-to-smallest size the company made at the time (smallest size was 00)!Larger sizes of Zenith cleavers were used like a 2-handed ax to slaughter livestock with a single blow remember that scene from the movie Apocalypse Now? , or to split the carcass of a steer along its length. For this reason, and because those handles were usually made of turned wood, this style of cleaver eventually came to be known as a bat. " This VERY impressive "0, though one of the smallest among giants, will still be the last word in any argument any modern chef or butcher is likely to have with even a very large cut of meat. Weighing in at 29 ounces, it is fully capable of jointing even the largest cuts of beef with one deft and sudden, WHOOMPHH! The piece is in overall beautiful condition, as you can see in the photos, with a glowing patina derived from the passing of many years and the touch of a thousand hands. Blade is hand-forged carbon steel of the highest quality with a full hidden tang, edged so keenly that you could literally shave with it. Handle is made of solid, premium grade walnut nearly 2 in diameter and beautifully grooved for traction on your hands, with the rat-tail tang of the blade peened over at the end, capped with a brass pommel disc.
Best of all, I think, is the grace and beauty with which it has been bolstered. It utilizes a VERY thick iron collar (the steel is 1/8 thick) which has kept the enormous head fixed tight and strong--I have no doubt you could use this item without fear of failure or breakage for another generation or two or three, despite its obvious age.
Whether you are someone who slaughters and dresses their own livestock or game, or just someone with an interest in bladed weapons and tools, you'll instantly appreciate the beauty of this mini monster.
