Absolutely massive, 19th century, OLD FILE brand, Cleaver, splitter, lamb splitter, hog splitter, call it what you will. From a bygone time, both in butchering practices, and metallurgy. A full 20'' long, 10'' handle, with 4 rivets, and beautiful wood in great condition. The evidence of hand forging on an old martinet hammer forge is obvious by the extreme distal taper on the back of the spine and tang. Not ground to look forged like most lesser cleavers. Looking down upon this tool, the blade starts out at less than an 1/8'' at the tip of the blade and tang, and then swells to an impressive 3/8'' in the center, for the perfect balance. I tried to capture this in the pictures, because to me, it is the most impressive aspect of the piece. Amazingly light in the hand for such a brutal weapon. A beautiful piece to lay eyes on. An adrenaline surge to hold. Feels like a battle axe in the hand. When I brought it home my girlfriend was instantly alarmed as I held it, saying that it was scary. I don't know the full history of this cleaver obviously, but I bought it from a man who lives in a van down by the river here in Fort Bragg CA, who I hire to mow my lawn.

He had it stored in a friends house for ten years, while he was personally homeless, hanging from a string coated in olive oil way up 12 feet high in the pantry of and old victorian home. An eccentric wood turner lives there, and the cleaver did very well stored like this for at least 10 years. No rust, just patina, never used it, I never sharpened it, just in "as found" condition. One side of the last rivet on the end of the handle is missing, I could easily fix this, but I thought that it looked good "as is" and I like the little bit of green patina peeking out of the hole.

This is a tremendous knife, worth every penny of what ever you pay for, will never depreciate, is a piece of American cutlery history, and will likely overshadow everything else in your collection. Not for the faint of heart. Thank you for taking the time to read, and look at my pictures.

I hope this treasure goes to a loving home, and is curated well. The item "Huge 20'' Old File vintage antique cleaver lamb splitter carbon steel forged" is in sale since Tuesday, May 01, 2018. This item is in the category "Collectibles\Kitchen & Home\Kitchenware\Utensils\Cutlery".
