Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades.

In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This beautifully hand-wrought cleaver exemplifies the kind of cottage-level craftsmanship that was once much more typical of Italian-made cutlery, which joined the Industrial Revolution in Europe relatively late in the game. Until the vast factories of the North began to produce fine cutlery, users in Italy had to choose between expensive French and British imports or the hand-made wares of the local blacksmith. This piece most certainly is of the latter category.

It dates probably from the late 1800's/early 1900's and has obviously been worn smooth and warm--almost glowing--by the touch of a thousand hands and the passing of many, many years. As such, it was probably meant to be used on lighter fare, like lamb, goat, veal or even larger fish like tuna. As such, this is one that would be found a lot more commonly in the south of Italy, where smaller fare was far more common than beef. SLIGHTLY smaller though it may be it is FAR from small. It weighs in at just over 6 pounds, 1 ounce, and measures.

30" long with a hand-forged carbon steel blade that's 16" long by 9.75 wide. Remains entirely stable and capable of dispatching a steer for dinner tonight, if need be. The digital photos simply don't do justice to the solid quality and beauty of this piece, which is, without a doubt, one of the largest and most frightening cleavers of its kind ever made.

It's in excellent condition with no problems of any kind--rock solid and ready to work. It's even still VERY sharp in a way that very few cleavers ever can be. Handles are probably oak but could be some other kind of hardwood; it's hard to tell on this piece because of how it has been patinated by the touch of human hands over the years.

Rivets are brass-inside-brass and hand-wrought over a full and fatted tang. To be sure, Italian blacksmiths of the 19th Century did not believe in planned obsolescence or in the disposable nature of today's hardware! There are no maker's marks on it, which is not surprising, considering its humble origins, though today such craftsmanship should take a bow and would be well-deserving of a standing ovation.

It came to us as part of a rather large collection of fine vintage cutlery items from an estate in Italy, and was certainly used. To some, it's the stuff of nightmares, unless you actually needed to use one, in which case it's a dream come true--as fine a tool as has ever been made to do the job. The grace and beauty with which it has been shaped and constructed set it apart from comparable American or German pieces, and leave us to wonder about the skill and talent of the men whose lifelong calling it was to forge bladed tools and weapons like this.

It is, afterall, that skill and talent which have kept the enormous head fixed tight and strong--I have no doubt you could use this item today without fear of failure or breakage, despite its obvious age. We should give a moment's pause, too, to the poor men whose unfortunate lot in life it was to wield a cleaver like this, day in and day out, in some horrific slaughterhouse of its time.

And to their long-suffering families; imagine how nice they were to THEIR families after a long day on so dehumanizing a job. Whether you are someone who slaughters their own livestock or butchers their own game, or just someone with an interest in bladed weapons and tools, you'll instantly appreciate the utilitarian beauty of this monster.
