This is a GREAT piece of cutlery and a true rarity, hand-forged in Shelbourne Falls, Massachusetts sometime in the 1920s-40s, and very similar to those that were produced for the military, though this was a civilian piece. Made by Lamson & Goodnow, it comes from America's oldest continually operated maker of cutlery dating back to the very beginnings of the Industrial Revolution in this country. The company was founded by a blacksmith and that tradition of fine hand-forging is highly evident in the quality of this knife's materials and construction.
Its whopping carbon steel blade was hand-forged to perfection with solid beechwood handles, bevelled and beautifully mellowed by the touch of hands and the passing of many years. The handle is triple-brass riveted over a full tang and its blade has one of the largest bullnose tips you'll ever see, measuring nearly 3 wide at its hump. Its original purpose was for splitting in half the carcasses of small livestock like lamb and veal--KERCHUNKKKK!!!
Best of all about the piece is its condition which is exceptional, with no damage to blade or handles. For the purposes of this sale has been given a professionally applied RAZOR sharp edge that is BETTER than when it was new. This knife will surprise even many seasoned users. Caution, please, or a careless user may find himself in the E. In need of a hand. Hunters will also gravitate towards this knife and the bigger the game they hunt, the better this knife will serve them. It is a direct descendant of the knives carried by buffalo hunters 150 years ago, and for anyone interested in re-enactment of that period, this would look mighty fine and dandy at one's belt. Measures 18-3/8" long with a 12.5" blade that's 3/16 thick, tapering slightly toward point, and the entire piece weighs in at an impressive 27.7 ounces. A HUGE , heirloom-quality piece that will instantly upgrade any professional kitchen or serious collection.
