This is a really BIG find, in more ways that one. Without a doubt, it's one of the most impressive spatulas of its kind I have ever seen and I've seen just about all of them. It's also better made, hand-forged from the finest carbon steel with an integral blade/bolster/tapered tang construction, brass-pinned onto gorgeous, old-growth rosewood handle scales. It was made in Massachusetts by the John Russell company in their legendary Green River Works and is the kind of piece that made them legendary.
I doubt that it's much newer than the early 1900's, as evidenced by its craftsmanship and quality. When we obtained it, however, instead of being used as a palette knife, as its makers intended, it came to us as part of a larger collection of baker's tools (including some VERY old, VERY beautiful wooden bread piels, which we'll soon also be posting), where it was undoubtedly used in the making of cakes, the spreading of frostings and fillings, and for flipping pastries of every description--pancakes, eggs, you name it.
It's fully capable of preparing foods on the largest possible scale but whether you're making flap-jacks for an infantry battalion or making a wedding cake for 500 of your closest family and friends, you'll find none better. Its integral blade/bolster/tang construction was forged from one single piece of tempered carbon steel of the very highest quality. It's also found here in excellent condition, measuring 18.5" long with a comparatively stiff and sturdy 12-7/8" blade that is a maximum of 2-5/8 wide. Both sides of the handle are entirely free of cracks, looseness or other problems and the piece is 100% rock solid. Each side of the handle has a previous owner's ID lightly carved into it but that just lends it some character and the price has been adjusted downward just a little in accord.Despite its obvious collector value, it'd be a shame not to keep on using it. If you're a professional baker or just someone who lives by a bigger-is-better philosophy, you know how important the proper tools are to successful outcomes.
