St Louis 13" Blade With 18" Wooden Handle Full Tang This is a huge old cleaver with a 13 blade. It was made by the Brecht Co. Louis which was a butcher's supply company established in St Louis in 1853. In 1920, the name was changed from Brecht's Butcher Supply Company to the Brecht Company. I have not been able to find out when the company quit it's operations.
This cleaver is in good shape. There is a bit of chipping on the cutting edge and a few, small strikes to the spine. This is cleaver that was used to split carcasses.
It has a full tang with a hole in the cleaver as well as in the end of the handle. Could be hung in either direction. The wooden scales are tight.Berkeley blacksmith and tool collector's estate.
