Please read our Terms below for details. Now THIS Is a cleaver to get excited about. This wonderful old bat-style meat cleaver is well over a hundred years old and still outperforms anything on the modern market by a country mile. Measuring a whopping 21.5" long with a 10" by 6-3/8" blade that's 1/4" thick, it's just the right size for use at the slaughterhouse, splitting carcasses of livestock so the meat-cutters further down the line can dress them out into manageable retail cuts like steaks, chops and roasts. It is the piece in your kitchen or meat locker you want to reach for when you only want to reach once.
I assure you, whatever it is that you may need to divide in half with it, will be permanently divided in half on the first try. It's also remarkable for its condition.
Most pieces like this have chipped edges and broken handles, but this has none of those problems, nor any other--condition is flat-out excellent. It is even more beautiful than the digital photos make it look, even though it looks pretty good already. Its thick carbon steel blade was hand-forged from the finest American tool steel and its performance is off the charts. It has a full, hidden tang that pierces its turned hickory handle and its peened over with a pommel disk to secure it.As you can see in the photos it is beautifully weathered and patinated from the passing of many years and the touch of a thousand hands. It was produced in Evansville, Indiana by the Evansville Tool Works, and bears that stamping along with the company's wolf's-head logo. They were better known for making hand-tools of every variety but their cleavers and other knives are, though rare, of the very highest quality. The entire piece is beautifully weathered and it just begs to be held. Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able. Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and there should be no doubt it can still do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock. It has a RAZOR sharp edge now because we've had it professionally edged for this sale; it's guaranteed to THRILL even the most jaded user.
Handle has no cracks, chips, or damage to wood at all--just superb in every way. If you're simply collecting butcher or chef cutlery, you're in luck--this is a rare opportunity to add some authenticity and quality--not to mention heft--to your collection on what you'll rightly come to think of as an heirloom. Our store's inventory is searchable using the search field or may be browsed by clicking on categories, with each option found on the left side of the store's homepage.
