Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This wonderful old knife may look merely BIG at first glance, but up close and personal it is truly scary. By any name it's the knife you want to reach for when you only want to reach once. I assure you, whatever it is that you may need to divide in half with it, will be permanently divided in half on the first try. It is a MASSIVE piece, to say the least, weighing in at 27.3 ounces and measuring 17" long with a 12-3/8" by 2-5/8" blade that's ¼" thick, tapering in every direction from there. Knives like this were made for splitting the carcasses of smaller livestock like lamb, veal, goat and sheep. FIshmongers also used these extensively, as did lobster men. It's also a style and size, though, that was widely carried by buffalo hunters in the years immediately following the Civil War.
I doubt that it dates back nearly that far, but it's certainly of that lineage, and there's been nothing on the market in carbon steel for decades. It's also remarkable for its condition. Most pieces like this have chipped edges and numerous hammer marks on the top of the blade's spine, deforming it considerably. This has none of those problems, nor any other--condition is flat-out excellent, apart from some very normal discoloring from use.
It's not marked and that's a shame because whoever made this one deserves to come forward and take a bow. Who made it is secondary, however, to how well they made it and this knife was made stupendously well. Its large curved, clipped-point blade was hand-forged with a full tang, triple riveted over its full and tapered tang using some unusual, hand-wrought copper rivets.
Its blade is RAZOR keen--as found. Handles are guttapercha and are also in excellent condition. As you can see in the photos the entire piece is beautiful and it just begs to be held. Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able.Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and I have little doubt it could still do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock. Condition is just superb in every way.
