It was hand-forged with a blade that's wider and heavier than most knives of this kind, weighing in at an impressive 18 ounces, unpackaged. Known sometimes as a buffalo skinner but usually as a lamb-splitter, it's the knife you want to reach for when you only want to reach once. I assure you, whatever it is that you may need to divide in half with it, will be permanently divided in half on the first try. Navy throughout the company's history. This knife is of a style and size that was widely carried by buffalo hunters in the years immediately following the Civil War.
It doesn't date back that far, but it's certainly of that lineage. As you can see in the photos, it's nothing less than stunning. Best of all, it is rock solid today, even more than a hundred years, and will delight any serious user as much as any collector.
Its large curved carbon steel blade was hand-forged with a full and tapered tang, riveted over solid rosewood handles with the old iron 6-pin configuration. Rosewood is also a rarity on a knife like this with the vast and overwhelming majority of them having beechwood.
If you find yourself wishing this piece could talk we understand completely and promise not to tell anyone. Its makers marks are clearly stamped into the piece on both blade and handle. Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able.Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and I have little doubt it could still do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock. The handles are as warm and comfortable in the hand as they are easy on the eye. Comes with 12-1/8" blade (17-3/8" overall length) that is 2.25" wide at its widest, and runs a little more than 3/16" thick, triple-tapered towards tip, pommel and edge.
