Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This is the second of two similar pieces we're offering today, made in Shelbourne Falls, Massachusetts by Lamson & Goodnow, America's oldest continuously operated cutlery maker. It is a VERY rare piece of this construction by this maker, precisely because they are so old; having been founded prior to the advent of factory-style meat production, they did not have the infrastructure that companies founded later, like Foster Brothers, would.

But what Lamson may have lacked in market share, they more than made up for in quality--then as even today. This enormous vintage slaughterhouse cleaver is as fine as any that was ever made proving once and for all that when American makers put their minds to it they made knives and other bladed items as well as anyone. It's a two-handed piece, made for halving and quartering livestock as it passed along a line. It dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's but is in surprisingly excellent condition, as you can see, BEAUTIFULLY patinated with a very full blade and rock solid rosewood handles: no problems of any kind. It measures 21" long with a blade that's 11" by 7" wide and a massive 3/8" thick at the hilt, hafted with iron rivets over a full and tapered tang. At the bolster it is reinforced with a massive iron ferrule to keep this critical juncture strong and tight. Weight of the piece is an impressive 4 pounds, 7 ounces. As with all carbon steel knives, it must be kept dry, even during use, but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superb edge maintenance and performance offered by carbon steel, as any experienced chef or butcher over the age of 50 can confirm.

Used to slaughter larger livestock with a single blow remember that scene from the movie "Apocalypse Now, " in which they ritually slaughter a water buffalo? , and for splitting a carcass into halves and quarters. One could use it to joint the carcass of a rhinocerous.

It's the stuff of nightmares, unless you actually needed to use one, in which case it's a dream come true--as fine a tool as has ever been forged to do the job. We're offering this piece exactly as we found it and that is in very good condition, as you can see in the photos. Whether you are someone who slaughters their own livestock or butchers their own game, or just someone with an interest in bladed weapons and tools, you'll instantly appreciate the beauty of this monster.
