In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. This beautiful antique paring knife is a piece of exceptional quality that dates back well over a hundred years to the reign of Britain's Queen Victoria yet remains as beautiful and useful today as the day it was first forged. The piece is stamped with the royal crown logo, flanked by "V" and "R" (for Victoria Regina) atop, "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS, CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY, " along with the company's Maltese cross hallmarks indicating the piece was made sometime before 1901, when Victoria died.
Rodgers is probably the most celebrated cutler of that legendary city and their reputation for outstanding quality was unparalleled at the time of its manufacture. Its condition is excellent, as you can see in the photos. Blade is hand-forged carbon steel of the finest quality. Its handle was made from hard black rubber or some kind of early composite material, bolstered in pewter at the critical juncture where handle meets blade. Blade and handle have always been kept with a very thin layer of non-toxic mineral oil and the resulting patina is just beautiful.Best of all, this exceptional knife was recently given an EXTREMELY sharp professional edge and must be treated with extreme care or will land a careless user in the ER needing stitches. In the old days, many classically trained French chefs didn't consider a knife fit for professional use until it received its first "working" edge upon receipt from the factory. Sushi chefs continue this tradition with their rituals of water stones and the resulting keen of their blades is virtually alien to casual (and to many professional) users of Western indoctrination. This knife comes pretty close to just that kind of sharpness and you'll have no trouble finding a myriad of uses for it. Measuring 8.5" long with a 4.25" blade, the quality of its hand-forged carbon steel blade and beautiful handle is exquisite. When you use a knife like this, it feels like an extension of your hand, not a mere object that you're holding.
It's superb aesthetics are matched by it's performance. This is the perfect knife for a wide variety of kitchen tasks, but it truly excels at finer work, like peeling, paring, mincing a clove of garlic or reducing a small handful of your garden's freshest herbs into smaller piles of aromatic goodness. You will not find a sharper, more functional blade than those hand-forged from Sheffield steel.
