Please read our Terms below for details. PLEASE NOTE: We take our photos in natural light outdoors and as a result there are sometimes reflections or shadows or glare shown in the blades. In person none of these exist; we will say so in the description if it may be otherwise. I've had this fine chef knife for about thirty years.
It was made out in the desert in the very small town of Phelan by L. Johnson's Johnson Knife Company. There ARE area codes, so it's no older than about 1947, when Ma Bell first introduced area codes in the USA. The design of its inlaid bolstering work is Swedish in origin and it wouldn't surprise me if the original Mr. Johnson came from that part of the world. When I first found it I assumed it had been made by some local blacksmith or enterprising handyman of Swedish descent, of which there are many in the midwest. My assumption was based on the fact that Mr. Johnson was much more concerned about using great materials and creating affordable knives that PERFORM, leaving the polish of the factory-made stuff to the factories. Don't be fooled, though, this knife is FAR from being a country bumpkin; it is instead a slick and sophisticated neo-Luddite, seeking to shed the compromised quality of mass production for the craftsmanship and excellence that was already a bygone thing by 1947.
In terms of its quality of materials and craftsmanship, it's got just about everything going for it one could ask. Blade is carbon steel with a subtle radius grind that will enable INCREDIBLE performance. It is RAZOR sharp now and is easy to keep that way. Achieving this kind of blade took time and love and expertise and one touch of its edge will make you know what an edge should be like.
Blade has been firmly anchored into the beautiful birchwood handle by virtue of a thick pewter bolster, inlaid similarly at the sides. It's a great knife as you can plainly see in the photos, but I really think you'd need to hold it in your hand to fully appreciate it.We didn't think so. Condition is excellent with no problems of any kind. It's 11.75" long with 7.5" blade that's a full 2 wide at the heel--a HUGE benefit to large hands and small, providing extra knuckle clearance and power without any of the drag of using a clunky knife--just a superb design and execution on this knife. By any measure this is a great knife at a very reasonable price.
