WIDE Vintage Carbon Steel Chef Buffalo Skinner/Lamb Splitting Knife RAZOR SHARP
This wonderful old knife may look merely BIG at first glance, but up close and personal it is truly scary. Known alternately as a buffalo skinner and a lamb-splitter, it's the knife you want to reach for when you only want to reach once. I assure you, whatever it is that you may need to divide in half with it, will be permanently divided in half on the first try.

FIshmongers also used these extensively, and it is no coincidence that this knife has a somewhat shark-shaped profile. The hole in the blade was useful for hanging on a nail or hook, but the sellers of these were not unaware of the figural fish appearance it gave the piece. It's a style and size, though, that was widely carried by buffalo hunters in the years immediately following the Civil War. I doubt that it dates back that far, but it's certainly of that lineage, and there's been nothing on the market in carbon steel for decades.

It's also remarkable for its condition. Most pieces like this have chipped edges and numerous hammer marks on the top of the blade's spine, deforming it considerably. This has none of those problems, nor any other--condition is flat-out excellent, apart from some very normal discoloring from use.

It's not marked but I can think of only a small handful of makers who produced these in this size and shape, especially noteworthy for its extra-wide blade. My best guess is that it's a Village Blacksmith piece, made in Watertown Wisconsin, but makers Enderes (of Minnesota) and Harris (of Iowa) also made them. Who made it is secondary, however, to how well they made it and this knife was made stupendously well. Its large curved carbon steel blade was hand-forged with a full tang, triple birdseye-riveted over solid rosewood handles of the finest quality. Its blade has been professionally edged for this sale to be RAZOR keen--far sharper than when it was new.

Its makers marks are no longer evident, which is a shame, but the entire piece is beautiful and it just begs to be held. Though it has some considerable collector value, it would be a shame not to use it, if you're able.

Carbon steel blades of this vintage can hold a razor's edge like no other and I have little doubt it could still do more than its share of butchering of game or livestock. Comes with 11-5/8" blade (17-5/8" overall length) that is 3 wide at its widest, and runs almost. 25 thick along most of its length. Handle has no cracks, chips, looseness or damage to wood at all--just superb in every way.
