This amazingly beautiful knife is a superbly crafted piece in remarkably well-preserved condition. Made in Germany by Wusthof, circa 1940's, this outstanding piece was made with a hand-forged carbon steel blade hafted with gorgeously grained old-growth African ebony handles triple riveted onto a full and tapered tang with the old-fashioned birdseye nickel-silver rivets. It has been used very little and is in excellent condition with a blade honed RAZOR sharp far beyond what its factory edge could offer--keen enough to thrill even the most jaded user. It has always been kept in outstanding condition, as you can see.
The carbon steel blade is able and ready to serve a useful lifetime of creating PAPER-THIN slices of your favorite meats, poultry, fish (it's superb for salmon), tomatoes or whatever else you put in its way. Want to cut in half an entire sheet of cake through its thickness on a single stroke? If you've never used a carbon steel knife before, you're in for a treat.
Experienced chefs know that only a true carbon steel blade can consistently attain the razor-sharp edge that makes cooking a true pleasure you must wipe the knife after every use to avoid stains and rusting, but will be richly rewarded with superior performance! The handle is as warm in the hand as it is easy on the eye--just gorgeous--entirely free of any cracks or other problems. The rounded tip allows the knife to glide around bone and to also permit it to be used as a serving piece at a carving station or at your Thanksgiving table.
It's comes with a 12.5" blade (it's 18.25" overall)--beautifully balanced in your hand. Without doubt, this is one of the finest slicing knives you'll ever use. Wusthof, Dreizackwerk, Solingen, Germany (with trident logo).
The knife was probably made shortly after WWII and LONG predates the industry's conversion from virgin steel to recycled, representing a level of craftsmanship and quality that are now lost to the economic realities of our age. This knife is perfectly balanced and will make you wonder why you suffered for all these years struggling with inferior stainless. When you hold a knife like this it feels like an extension of your hand, not like something you're simply holding. Whether you are a professional or amateur chef, you'll instantly come to love this magnificent vintage knife as one of your very favorites. Also will make an exceptionally surprising gift for the discriminating chef on your list.
A WORD ABOUT MAINTENANCE: Never use a dishwasher with this knife; my angry ghost will haunt any who do. Wash the knife by hand and wipe clean immediately thereafter.
Wipe the knife clean when using it on wet or acidic foods. It WILL rust if not maintained properly. I apply a very thin coat of non-toxic mineral oil to blade and wooden handles periodically, to seal them from ambient moisture in the atmosphere (olive or corn oil will suffice).
